Minimally Invasive Surgeries for Joint Replacement

For years now, the Femino-Ducey Orthopaedic Group has been offering minimally invasive surgery to patients requiring joint replacement. Partial knee replacement surgeries, mini-incision total knee and hip surgeries and minimally invasive total hip surgery are helping to get patients back to their active lifestyle.

Partial Knee Replacement
The unicompartmental knee, or partial knee replacement, is a viable alternative to total joint replacement surgery for those suffering from arthritis in one part of the knee. These patients can benefit enormously by this surgery. The majority of people that suffer from osteoarthritis of the knee have arthritis on the inside of the knee. This surgery resurfaces the part that is arthritic, straightens the knee out, and most importantly, it rids the knee of arthritic pain. The surgery itself is less painful and requires less post-operative rehabilitation.

In contrast to the total knee replacement, the partial joint replacement surgery is less invasive, and incisions in the knee generally measure three inches. Patients can go home the day of surgery whereas a total knee replacement usually requires a three-day hospital stay. The partial knee replacement enables patients to return to normal activities in as little as two weeks while recovery from total knee surgery could take six weeks or more.

The partial knee may last eight to 10 years. Patients can have relief of pain without having to consider a total knee replacement for many years.

Mini-Incision Surgeries & Minimally Invasive Total Hip
The partners at the Femino-Ducey Orthopaedic Group believe that mini-incision total knee and hip surgeries and minimally invasive total hip surgery are in the best interest of the patient and utilize these procedures if appropriate. Patients undergoing mini-incision surgery for total hip may have a 3 or 4 inch surgical incision in contrast to an 8 inch incision for a conventional procedure. The 4 to 6 inch incision for the mini-incision total knee replaces the 6 to 8 inch incision.

The goals of using minimally invasive techniques are:

  1. minimize blood loss during surgery
  2. shorten the patient’s hospital stay
  3. decrease pain during rehabilitation
  4. hasten the time a patient can return to normal activity, and
  5. realize potential cosmetic benefits.
Expert use of the freehand surgical technique coupled with carefully crafted state-of-the-art instrumentation are responsible for the orthopedic practice’s high success rate. Patients experience minimal trauma during surgery and surgical times are also kept to a minimum to help foster a speedy recuperation.
